How the Better Beef Collective Works

A structured, data-driven pathway from calf to processor.

Better Beef Collective connects dairy farmers, beef breeders, rearers and finishers in a coordinated supply network, ensuring strategic alignment from the start of every cohort.

Every stage is pre-ordered and linked by aligned genetics, benchmarked management protocols, and verified performance data that flows back through the chain, enabling fact-based decisions for all participants.

04

Processor Feedback & Grid Performance

At slaughter, boneless yield and grading data is captured and linked back to on-farm records across prime steer/heifer and bull beef. Carcase weights, fat cover, conformation and boneless yield are compared against the rolling average.

06

Step 6 – Next Intake & Review

Plan the next cohort cycle and review preceding cohort results to drive continuous improvement across the network.

01

Programme Entry & Supply Planning

Dairy farmers and breeders register cattle into the Better Beef Collective on Beef Centralâ„¢. Baseline data is captured - genetics, birth records, weights and treatments. Supply requirements are agreed in advance so rearers and finishers know what is coming and can plan accordingly.

02

Calf Rearing with Standardised Protocols

Rearers receive enrolled calves along with agreed rearing protocols. Feeding plans, health checks and growth targets will increasingly be benchmarked, standardised and recorded. Post rearing performance is established of the foundation of genetics, nutrition and health in the first 3 months.

03

Growing Out & Finishing to Spec

Finishers pre-order animals with a clear specification. They manage feed, weight gain and days on feed to hit agreed specifications. Performance data is recorded against each mob or cohort with feedback to rearers and ability for processing to plan with customers.

05

Data Loop Back & Continuous Improvement

Verified production and processor data is aggregated and reported back to each participant. Participants see which genetics, management and supply combinations deliver the best results. Each participant builds their own data asset but the power is as a collective leveraging the aggregated data.

Who is the programme designed for?

The programme is built for commercially-minded dairy farmers, beef breeders, rearers and finishers who want more predictable performance, clearer specifications and better use of data.

Do I have to commit all my cattle to the programme?

No. Many participants start with a defined line or cohort so they can compare performance against their existing system before scaling up.

How is performance data captured?

Data is collected from farm records, weighing sessions, health treatments and processor feedback. Beef Centralâ„¢ focuses on clean, verified data points that matter for growth, consistency and carcase outcomes.

One programme, shared performance standards.

Everyone in the chain works to the same benchmarks, so variability is reduced and profitability becomes more predictable.

What do I get back as a participant?

Participants have access to their data and aggregated data that link genetics, on-farm performance and processor outcomes. Over time this will make it easier to plan reliably and refine breeding, feeding and management decisions.

How do I join the Better Beef Collective?

Farmers can submit an application via the ‘Join the Programme’ page or talk directly to the team to discuss fit, supply options and timelines.
